Despite Mother Nature throwing everything but the kitchen sink at the Bryan area on the evening of September 30, the 2016 Homecoming celebration, soggy that it was, went forward with minor alterations to the planned itinerary. Alvordton residents were likely surprised to learn that the man they knew as John Wolford was really Bennie Roberts, a fugitive for 36 years. Roberts, now age 60, was arrested at 2:25 PM Thursday, October 29 at 203 S. Michigan Street in Alvordton, where he had lived for several years. Authorities eventually tracked him down there. Roberts had originally been charged with armed robbery in 1980 by the Tampa Police Department, who allege that Roberts used a sawed-off shot gun to steal a kilo of cocaine from undercover officers posing as drug dealers. A Paulding County jury needed only three hours to return two verdicts of guilty of murder against Bradley Gillespie, 43 of Defiance. Each count included a gun specification. The charges stemmed from the February murders of 2013 Montpelier High School graduate Hannah E. Fischer, 21, and her boyfriend, Frank Tracy Jr., 47, whose bodies were found in Paulding County. Fischer’s body had been found on February 9 in an apartment in Paulding; Tracy’s on March 15 in Rochester Cemetery. Money raised from a gun raffle has helped the Gorham-Fayette Fire Department add some new equipment to their main engine. The department had 1,000 tickets to sell and sold just under 500, Fire Chief Robert Stillion said. Profits from the raffle helped the department purchase a modern thermal imaging camera. The device will help protect the firefighters, civilians and property. Fire Chief Robert Stillion said the department gave out 19 of 30 guns. The camera and truck mount cost $6,200, Stillion said. The raffle raised just under $5,000 so the difference was made up from other fundraisers, he said.…

Dispensaries for medical marijuana will not be allowed in the village of Fayette following a decision by a sharply divided council. The council voted 4-3 (with Mayor David Borer casting the deciding vote) to prohibit dispensaries. The ordinance was passed after council declared an emergency. The prohibition allows the village to further study the law without a time limit. The vote came after Beth Thomas, program director of Healthy Choices/Caring Communities spoke on the new law in Ohio and what it regulates. Scores were down for Fayette Schools according to the State Report Card, but officials are not upset as most other schools scored lower as well. Fulton County has joined with Henry, Defiance and Paulding counties in a settlement with a Sylvania consulting firm over fees from the now defunct Port Authority. The four counties dissolved the authority in January of this year. The counties had entered into a contract with the firm in 2008 and renewed it in 2013, the extension was to terminate in July. When the authority dissolved, Arkebauer and Associates sued for money it claimed it was owed for services rendered. The counties and the firm met Aug. 25 to discuss the matter and a settlement was reached. The four counties will…
From September 23-25, five members of the Edon FFA Chapter attended Greenhand Camp 2016 at FFA Camp Muskingum. Members attending were Arianna Howard, Tray Howard, Caitlyn Dietsch, Jennifer Cook and Nick Schadewald. Greenhand Camp is only for first year or freshman FFA members and is a fun way to teach valuable leadership skills.
