(WAUSEON, OH) – As we are in the midst of the “Dog Days of Summer,” there is still an increased risk of dogs getting loose and wandering. Fulton County Dog Warden, Brian Banister, reports “the calls we receive for lost dogs, and dogs on the loose increase during the summer.” He notes that dog owners spend more time outside enjoying the long warm days, family bar-b-que’s and gatherings, and it’s simply more comfortable for dogs to be out exploring. “The warm weather, the days being longer, and even fireworks around holidays can be a risk factor for dogs becoming lost.”…
Lyn B. Houk, 78, of Montpelier passed away Saturday at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He was born on December 15, 1937 in Superior Township to Henry Albert and Hildreth Lenore (Drake) Houk. Lyn graduated from Montpelier High School in 1955. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during peacetime. Lyn married Rosalyn O. Mercer and she preceded him in death on April 19, 2006. Lyn retired in 2005 from Winzeler’s Stamping Company after 50 years in the Maintenance Department. During this time up until 1980 Lyn enjoyed working the 100 acre family farm. …

The Fulton 4-H Connection 4-H Club has had an interesting last couple months. They had a camping trip attended by 11 of 13 members, 3 advisors, and 18 family members. Council members passed the first reading of two resolutions for the renewal of Village fire levies. Both resolutions are to have the Fulton County Auditor certify the amount of revenue to be generated by the two .5 mil levies. The Village and York Township are still working to reach an agreement on the formula used to determine the percentage of financial responsibility for each. If the Village’s responsibility is lowered the new levies would not be required.…

The Bryan Area Foundation has given the YMCA a $500,000 gift toward its $2.5 million Capital Campaign to expand and renovate the facility. This is the largest grant the foundation has given. The renovations include a first floor cardio and strength training room, a children’s indoor play area, a group exercise studio, a new multi-purpose room and new lockers as well as an elevator that is compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. In what was scheduled to be the final pre-trial hearing, Bradley S. Gilbert, 22, of Montpelier entered a guilty plea on one count of aggravated murder with the specification that he had used a handgun when committing the crime. The charges are in connection to the death of Jonathon Hofner, whose body was found north of Montpelier in October of 2015. Catherine Charlene Smith, age 88, of Delta, passed to her eternal rest with Jesus early Saturday morning August 6, 2016 at Swanton Health Care. She was born the daughter of the late Charles and Mary (Biggers) Skiver on October 24, 1927 in Mountain Home, Arkansas. Charlene married Ray Whitson on January 10, 1948 in Mountain Home, AR. They were married for 20 years. To this union eight children were born. She then married Merlin N. Smith on August 5, 1972 in Delta and they were happily married for over 28 years. City Council approved the plan at its July 18 meeting and work could begin by the second week of August. The project will be performed in conjunction with a project at Bryan School. The Fulton County Economic Development Corp.’s golf outing is Sept. 15 according to Lyons Mayor Gleckler. The mayor also discussed the efforts of Delta, Swanton and Archbold to work on a possible annexation from their respective townships. A request by a company to place a vending machine outside the Village Hall was denied by council. Wauseon has installed solar panels to help eliminate algae at the reservoir. The West Unity Chamber of Commerce discussed some new events at its meeting Aug. 3. The Williams County Fair booth is being planned, along with some new ideas for Fall Fest. The web page is running smoothly with updates happening constantly. The Chamber will have some members attending the Leroy Wyse Jr. memorial at Floral Grove Cemetery. In 2014, Buckeye Firearms Foundation announced an initiative to put a trauma kit in every school building in Ohio. Now, one Boy Scout from northwest Ohio is seeking to further that goal as an Eagle project. Levi Baus, a 14-year-old from rural Archbold, Ohio, is raising funds to put a medical trauma kit in every Archbold area school classroom, and to provide medical training to school staff so that they can be prepared to use the kits effectively.
