MONTPELIER (January 2, 2025) – Montpelier freshman CJ Fidler scored 22 of his game-high 31 points in the first half to help the Locos to a big lead at halftime as they cruised to a 65-46 win over Edon in the BBC opener for both schools.
Montpelier took control right out of the gate with Fidler scoring five of the Locos first seven points to grab a 7-0 lead with 4:45 left in the first quarter.
A Cohen Hulbert bucket got Edon on the board, but the Locos responded with an 11-2 run to end the frame capped off by seven straight points from Fidler for an 18-4 lead.
Edon’s Corbin Chrisman connected on a triple to open the second quarter before a 10-2 run by the Locos as Fidler drilled back-to-back three pointers and Kenneth Smeltzer added a bucket to push the lead to 28-9 as Montpelier would eventually take a 37-12 lead to the locker room.
Montpelier maintained a twenty point or larger lead throughout the third quarter despite Edon shooting 50% (6/12) in the quarter and led 52-28 going to the fourth.
Edon made a run to start the fourth to cut into the Loco lead with Chrisman hitting a three to start the 12-3 spurt and Briggs Gallehue canned a triple from the right wing to trim the deficit to 55-40 with 4:45 remaining.
Montpelier regained control as a Wesley Hartsock field goal stopped the run and Gavyn Bass made consecutive triples from the right corner to close out the win.
Montpelier (6-2, 1-0 BBC) finished the game 24/48 from the floor including 8/18 from long range. Gallehue paced Edon (5-4, 0-1 BBC) with 13 and Hulbert tallied 11 markers.
