Betty Jane Short, age 92 years, of Archbold, passed away, Wednesday afternoon, April 5, 2023 at Fairlawn Haven in Archbold.
Betty was born May 12, 1930, in Napoleon, the daughter of the late Harmon and Mathilda (Hahn) Glanz.
She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, she attended its grade school and then Napoleon High School graduating in 1948.
She married Daniel P. Short Jr. on June 16, 1951, they have been married over 71 years. To this union were born two sons, Douglas P. and Dennis A.
Six weeks before Douglas was born, Betty’s father passed away. They later brought her mother to live with them in their home. She was with them for 20 years.
Betty had become a member of the Archbold Evangelical Mennonite Church and belonged to their Junior Ladies Aid, taught Sunday School to young children, also Bible School and assisted with crafts. She was later a member of Stryker United Methodist Church.
Betty was a farmer’s wife for 13 years before moving to Archbold in 1964. She became employed at Farmland News, working with the Ladies Pages and recipes until they moved to Eustis, FL in 1974.
In Florida she was a receptionist for 15 years at the Florida ELKS Children’s Hospital and the Lake County Health Department. In 2000 they returned to Archbold to retire in Fairlawn Village.
She loved flowers, enjoyed growing, arranging and painting them, also landscaping and a little sculpture. When on the farm she had accumulated over 50 rose bushes in beds along Route 6, now 34.
She is survived by her husband, Daniel P.; sons, Dennis A. (Donna) and Douglas P.; two grandchildren, Andrea (Tyler) Owens and Matthew (Rebecca) Short; and four great-grandchildren, Jayden Owens, Jaycee Owens, Josephine Short and Oaklyn Short.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and infant siblings, Wilbur and Phyllis D.
Services will be held on Monday, April 10, at 2 PM at Short Funeral Home in Archbold. Interment will follow in the Pettisville Cemetery. Friends may call on Monday from 1-2 PM before the service at the funeral home.
