Clifford Shidler (1923 – 2023)

Clifford L. Shidler, 100, of Bryan, Ohio, passed away Friday, July 21, 2023, at Bryan Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.

Cliff was born July 5, 1923, in Henry County, Ohio, son of the late Peter and Alice (Howe) Shidler.  He was a graduate of Malinta-Grelton High School.

On February 20, 1943, Cliff enlisted with the United States Army, serving with the 44th Infantry Division, until his honorable discharge on November 19, 1945.


He married Marcella M. Hull on August 22, 1947, and she preceded him in death on November 22, 1996.

Cliff retired as a plastic fabricator after 12 years with the L.E. Smith Company, and previously worked as a maintenance carpenter at the Ohio Art Company.

Cliff also worked at Spletzer and Son Construction Company and Stines Lumber Company. He was a member of the Melbern United Methodist Church and a former member of Bryan American Legion Post 284, Bryan Moose Lodge 1064, and Fountain City Squares.


Cliff was a talented woodworker and built four homes for his family. Along with his wife, Marcella, Cliff enjoyed travelling in their motor home and vegetable gardening.

In their younger years, they often could be found square dancing and ballroom dancing. Clifford enjoyed playing cards, including Bid Euchre, with his friends and family. He cherished the company and conversations he had at the Bryan Senior Center, where he had many friends.

Cliff is survived by his two sons, Douglas (Dorcas “Dee”) Shidler of Portland, Indiana, and Gregory Shidler of Bryan, Ohio; and three grandchildren, Dane (Tosha Markwell) Shidler, Debra Shidler, and Kylie Jo Shidler; six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marcella; grandson, Dennis Shidler; brother, Donald Shidler.


Visitation for Clifford L. Shidler will be held Tuesday, July 25, 2023, from 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. at Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral home, 206 North Lynn Street, Bryan. Funeral services for Cliff will begin at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 26, 2023, in the funeral home with Rev. Deb Widdowson officiating. Interment will follow in Grelton Cemetery, Henry County, Ohio with Military Graveside Rites.

Memorial contributions can be directed to the Bryan Senior Center, 1201 S. Portland Street, Bryan, Ohio 43506.
