Ringer’s Drug Store in the 100 block of South Main Street, Bryan, closed when owner Mic Ringer retired after nearly 40 years in the business. The drugstore was purchased by Mic’s parents, Ralph and Neva Ringer, from Dan Matthews in 1946. In 1971, the Bryan Times newspaper reported, “A new, larger and more convenient prescription counter was added in 1959, as well as a larger [soda] fountain service seating 18 people, to serve quick meals. The photo department and cosmetic department were enlarged and are comparable to city service stores. Ringers were the first in the area to offer a 10 percent discount on prescriptions to people over 65 years old.” Ringer’s soda fountain was removed as part of a 1972 store remodeling. In June 1970, Ringers opened its branch Bryan Professional Pharmacy at the Bryan Medical Group (now Parkview Physicians Group) at 442 West High Street. In March 1998, Ringer’s opened a G.N.C. (General Nutrition Center) on the north side of the store. On January 4, 2011, CVS Pharmacy acquired and moved the pharmacy operations of both Ringer’s Drug Store and Ringer’s Professional Pharmacy to the CVS Pharmacy at 341 West High Street. This circa 1950 photograph taken by the late Eldon Smith of Bryan shows the 100 block of Bryan’s South Main Street, the east side of the courthouse square. Businesses identified with signs are (left to right) Gorny-Winzeler, Ringer’s drug store, the Bryan 5, 10 and 25-cent Store, and J. J. Newberry Company.
