SWANTON (May 9, 2025) – Swanton’s Luke Marlow doesn’t throw his hands in disgust when he doesn’t get a call from an umpire. The Bulldog shortstop doesn’t chant something derisive like ‘by-you’ at an opponent like a common player would.
What Swanton’s junior lead-off hitter does is just play baseball…and he does it very well. Case in point was the fact that Marlow keyed three of Swanton’s run scoring innings that led to a 7-5 triumph over Edgerton.
“As I have said before, he is our spark plug,” Swanton coach Josh Siewert said. “I know when he gets on, we score 90% of the time. Whether it’s a walk, hit, whatever, he causes chaos on the bases and he finds ways to make it easy for us to get him in.”
Edgerton took a quick 2-0 against Adam Lemon in the first. Maddox Baker’s sharp single to right was followed by Cody Herman’s long triple to deep center and a wild pitch to plate the pair of runs.
With Marlow being the instigator, Swanton came right back to tie. Marlow sliced a single to right, went to second on a hit batter and a balk put Bulldogs on second and third with one down.
Baker, who started on the mound, almost got out of trouble by striking out Lemon, but Drake Harris’ soft liner off the end the bat landed safely in short center to bring home both runners to tie the game.
After giving up those two runs in the first, Lemon became dominating the 3 2/3 innings, giving up just one hit and striking out six hitters.
Meanwhile Marlow was firing up the Swanton offense two more times. In the third, he again cut a single to short right and went all the way to third on an error on Isaiah Bolyard’s grounder.
After Bolyard advanced to second on a first and third situation, Carsen Lemons bounced a two-run single up the middle to give Swanton a 4-2 lead.
Lemons then came around to score on an error on a double-play ball relay for a 5-2 Swanton advantage. Swanton took a four run lead the next inning and one more time Marlow was the key, starting the rally with a two-out walk.
A passed ball was followed by a Bolyard base hit that made it 6-2. Parker Elden’s single with two-out in the fifth would be Lemon’s last batter with the afore mentioned four run advantage.
“Seems like Adam always has one inning when he is slow, then he starts really getting after it as he did today,” Siewert explained.
“We were watching him on a pitch count, we have him pitching next week in preparation for the tournament, which was the only reason we pulled him.”
Brady O’Shea came to the mound and walked the next three hitters to force in a run, making it 6-3. Swanton got that run back in their half of the inning when Lemon reached on a bad hop single, then came around on two throwing errors on his steal attempt of second.
Edgerton again cut into the Swanton margin in the sixth. Noah Weaver began the inning with a line drive single and another walk spelled the end of the day for O’Shea.
Evan Reinhard gave up two, one-out run scoring singles by Bryce Schroeder and Elden to get Edgerton within 7-5.
Reinhard then clamped down, with help of the Swanton defense that did not commit an error to keep Edgerton off the board the rest of the night.
“We actually have put three in a row together like that now,” Siewert said of the mistake-free baseball.
“We took a little stretch there where we went 2-4 after than big start we had. We are starting to put it back together again.”
