The Citizens’ Police Academy was recently held by the Wauseon Police Department. This annual opportunity is offered to the citizens of Wauseon. It is an informative, 9 week educational program consisting of both classroom and field instruction. Topic sessions covered a K-9 demonstration, firearms, a police panel, a police department tour, forensics/crime scene investigation, crime lab and evidence gathering techniques, use of force, a CCNO tour, and narcotic/drug investigations. A variety of scenarios were used to help educate citizens about these topics that officers regularly experience as part of their duties.

This year eight citizens participated and graduated in the ceremony held November 7, 2013. Those participating included: Tyler Cahill, Richard Rowan, Meg Murphy, Johnathan Stein, Lee Spurgeon, Martha Spurgeon, Eric Martinez, and Ashley Schmunk.

The next class will be held in September 2014 and will cover similar topics. The requirements to attend include being at least 18 years old, living or working in the Wauseon School District, having a clear review of your criminal record, and a time commitment of 36 hours over 9 weeks. Class size is limited to 24 participants, and there is no charge for class. More information will be posted on the Wauseon Police Department Facebook page in 2014.
