Pettisville Comes From Behind To Beat Patrick Henry In Overtime

February 16, 2015Updated:December 31, 2020No Comments2 Mins Read

(February 10th, 2015) – PATRICK HENRY: The Lady Blackbirds didn’t lead for a single second in regulation. Yet, at the end of the night, it was in fact the Pettisville girls standing triumphant over the Patriot girls of Patrick Henry.

It took overtime to claim victory, but Pettisville was able to do so, 57-55.

Throughout the entire game, Patrick Henry moved the ball efficiently, giving the Patriots several clean looks at the basket from beyond the arc. They knocked most of them down, too, particularly in the first half.

In the first period, Pettisville fell behind to the outstanding shooting of the Lady Patriots. This put them at a 13-9 disadvantage. The Blackbird girls were unable to make up ground in the second quarter, where they were again outscored, this time 14-11. At the half, Pettisville found themselves on the wrong end of a 27-20 score.

Patrick Henry refused to let up in the third quarter. They again added to their lead, putting up 11 points to Pettisville’s 9. Going into the fourth quarter, the Lady Patriots had to be feeling pretty good about their chances of victory.

Than the fourth quarter happened.

Blackbird senior Mikala Avina, simply put, went off on the unsuspecting Patriots. Whether her team needed a three, layup, or steal, Avina made it happen. There were several other players who played intricate parts in the comeback as well, but none were as prominent as Avina on that night.

Topping off a 21-12 run to end regulation, Pettisville had forced an overtime to decide the victor. In the extra quarter, Pettisville pulled out the win thanks to a 7-5 effort.

Avina led all scorers in the contest, managing 29 points, including 6 triples. Dana Fricke had a great game as well, adding 13 points to the Pettisville total. Kate Kauffman earned 6 points in the dramatic victory as well.
