(March 30th, 2015) – WEST UNITY: Keeping pace with their guests from the Green Meadows Conference throughout most of the game, it was the seventh inning that saw contest fall out of the reach of the Lady Cadets.

The Hilltop girls fell to the Bulldogs of Edgerton 7-4.

Early in the contest, Edgerton knocked in a pair of runs to establish a 2-0 lead. At the bottom of the opening inning, however, the girls of West Unity were able to cut that in half, bringing in a run of their own. Each squad added another run in the second inning. A scoreless third inning led to a noisy fourth, with the Lady Bulldogs taking on another run before seeing Hilltop tie the game with 2 more runs in the bottom of the inning. That left the score at 4-4 with three innings left to play.

Edgerton took back the advantage in the top of the fifth, pulling ahead by 1 run once again. After a quiet sixth inning, the Bulldog girls were able to tack on 2 more runs to their total. This sealed Hilltop’s fate, as they were handed a 3 run loss in a contest that was much closer than its final score would indicate.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Cadets actually played pretty well. They stranded an impressive 16 runners on base. Errors cost the West Unity natives dearly, as only 3 of Edgerton’s 7 runs were batted in. The rest of the Edgerton scoring could be accounted for with the 3 errors and 6 walks committed by Hilltop.

That’s not to say Lady Cadet pitcher Aubrey Wyse played poorly. On the contrary, in seven innings, she gave up just 3 earned runs on 4 hits. She also struck out 4 Bulldog batters.

At the plate, Bailey Funkhouser had a tremendous game. In her three at bats, she hit a pair of singles and walked. Overall, Funkhouser was responsible for three RBIs. Senior Adreyn Yates went a perfect 3 for 3 in the batter’s box, with 2 doubles and a single. While Yates didn’t drive in any runs, she did cross home plate twice.
