In celebration of National Poetry Month in April, Pioneer Library held a Blackout Poetry Contest. To enter the contest, teens and adults were given a page cut out from a withdrawn paperback book. Then they created a poem by blacking out, coloring, and using artistic talents to feature words that made a poem on the page. The poems were posted on the library’s bulletin board throughout the month, and patrons voted for their favorite page.
Pioneer Branch Library patrons have chosen Jennifer Bethel’s poem as the winning entry. The poem read:
“You know why they’re here.
They’ve been sent to us.
If there was any place to run to,
Half of ‘em would be gone.
Perhaps so, but it’s our job to make them go.
Better get to it.”
The Blackout Poetry Contest is a fun way to encourage writing and creativity. This is the third year the library has held the contest. Many patrons actively participate, and all enjoy seeing the posted artwork.
