EDON (September 12, 2025) – Getting off to a successful beginning in the Toledo Area Athletic Conference was essential for the Edon Bombers after toppling Summerfield, Michigan, 49-20, in the conference opener Friday, September 12, for both teams.

Following a 2-1 non-conference start to begin the season, the Bombers faced a squad that had entered the contest with an unblemished 2-0 record and had averaged 47.5 points per game.

“I thought our kids played hard and for the most part the whole game,” said Edon head coach Bob Olwin.

Playing in their first-ever TAAC football game, the visiting Bulldogs found out quickly just how good the Bombers are on the gridiron.

“We weren’t quite sure what we were going to get,” admitted the Edon coach. “We had no history with this team, and the same thing with Erie Mason.

“So, we had to just wait and see during the game what they were going to come up with, and now we know.”

What was probably their best overall performance of the season, the Bombers proved it on their first offensive series, marching 65 yards on eight plays in a span of 2:35 with quarterback Briggs Gallehue finding Kadin Stantz on a 17-yard TD pass at the 9:23 mark of the first quarter.

“We like to get off to that kind of start,” pointed out Olwin. “We’ve been stepping on our tongue all year and finally put a drive together and scored.

“When we got ahead early, they had to play catch-up, and then we get a stop or something. Then you’re in trouble with the way we move the ball sometimes offensively.”

The Bombers would put together a 12-play drive covering 79 yards, and on second and nine from the Bulldogs’ 11-yard line, Gallehue suffered an ankle injury and was sidelined for the rest of the game with 54 seconds left in the first quarter. He had completed 9 of 12 passes for 96 yards and two scores prior to his injury.

Junior wide receiver Corbin Chrisman replaced Gallehue at quarterback, and on the next play, he found Stantz on a short two-yard scoring pass with 43 seconds remaining in the quarter.

“We have four quarterbacks that warm up every day, in practice,” pointed out the Edon coach.

“Two of them are wide receivers and one is a linebacker,” said Olwin. “If we got down to the nitty gritty, (Kendol) Brigle can do it. That’s how I train them.”

Following an 84-yard scoring scamper by Summerfield running back Austin Taylor that closed the gap top 14-6 early in the second quarter, Chrisman then completed four straight passes to Gauge Nester (10 yards), Stantz (15 yards), Eli Dickmann (-2 yards) and Brigle (18 yards), before finishing the drive off with a 10-yard quarterback keeper scoring run at the 7:13 mark of the first half.

Chrisman, who was 8 of 13 for 79 yards through the air in the first half, was a perfect 4 for 4 in the second half for 94 yards and three scores.

“I got to step up, so this is what I had to do and just went through with it,” admitted Chrisman.

“I started off nervous, but as the game went on, I got more confident with my throwing. We needed this win to stay in the conference race.”

Summerfield (2-1, 0-1 TAAC) scored again with quarterback Reece Kalb finding wide receiver Trent Miller on a 58-yard touchdown pass to pull within a touchdown, 21-12, with 5:33 remaining in the half.

Edon scored again just before halftime, with Parker Moyer scoring on a one-yard plunge, and a decisive 28-12 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, the Bombers added three more touchdowns. Chrisman connected twice via a 19-yard strike to Brigle and a 60-yard screen pass to Landen Reitzel for scores.

Brigle ended up with nine catches for 103 yards and a touchdown, leading the Edon receiving corps.

“Corbin (Chrisman) came in for Briggs (Gallehue) and did a helluva of a job tonight,” pointed out Olwin.

“I knew he can do it. He’s one of those kids who doesn’t have a lot of confidence in his quarterbacking, and I see it. I’m anxious to see what he can do this week and see how long it takes for Briggs to come back.”

The Bombers’ final touchdown occurred on the final play of the third quarter. Moyer intercepted a Bulldogs’ pass and returned it 42 yards to the house.

“I thought our backs ran hard, our linemen blocked for the most part, and we knocked them off the ball,” said Olwin.

“We took what they gave us, eat the clock with running the ball. So, everybody just can’t load up on our pass now, and we’re able to run it.”

Taylor, who finished with 137 yards on 16 carries, scored the other Summerfield touchdown from 11 yards out in the fourth quarter.

Edon outgained Summerfield, 369-272, in total offense. The Bombers, after giving up 187 yards in the first half, limited the Bulldogs to 115 yards in the second half (59 rushing, 56 passing).

The Bombers (2-1, 1-0 TAAC) hit the road on Friday at Erie Mason in conference action.
