Crane Township – The Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Van Wert Post is investigating a fatal crash that occurred at approximately 6:30 P.M. Saturday evening on County Road 176 just west of Township Road 105, in Paulding County.
A 1995 Peterbilt semi, driven by Matthew Mulligan, age 36, of Montpelier, Ohio, was westbound on County Road 176. A 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix, driven by Abby Shumaker, age 33, of Defiance, Ohio, was eastbound on County Road 176 and drifted left of center striking the semi head on.
Shumaker received fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene by Dr. Joseph M. Kuhn, Paulding County Coroner. Mulligan was belted and received minor injuries.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted on scene by the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office, Paulding Fire and EMS, Hague Towing and Recovery, and Gideon’s Towing and Recovery.
Alcohol is believed to be a factor. The crash remains under investigation.
