The city of Bryan will be getting a large swath of new asphalt with a new paving project.

City Council approved the plan at its July 18 meeting and work could begin by the second week of August. The project will be performed in conjunction with a project at Bryan School.

The Council awarded the contract to Gerken Paving for the Fountain Grove Drive rehabilitation. It will include a 22-foot wide section of asphalt done in conjunction with school.

Same contractor doing paving on both projects, city employee Brian Weiland said.

“It will be seamless,” Weiland said.

The school’s portion will almost touch Markey Drive and the field house, Weiland said.

A center turn lane will start in front of the school’s property. There will be an additional 12 feet of paving.

The township will reimburse the city for 2 inches of asphalt.

The concrete base will be laid the first or second week of August, Weiland said.

Paving and striping will follow on both the city’s and the school’s projects. The tentative completion date is Sept. 2.

All new asphalt will stretch from Town Line and Center Street south to Fountain Grove and 12C, and then east to SR 15/U.S. 127. There will be no additional street lighting at this time.

The council also approved a request to advertise for bids for Training Range Bridge.

The city budgeted $175,000 for the project this year and is now in the final stages of design. It will be an aluminzed box culvert with aluminum bottom and aluminum arches, Weiland said.

The cost could change depending on the 100-year flood projections and whether the existing bridge abutments have to be taken out, he said.

The Police Department promoted Patrolman Mario Rodriguez to sergeant following his scores on the written and oral exams. Rodriguez finished first in both written and oral sections of five applicants.

The promotion was effective July 19. Rodriguez will face a six-month probation period.

Weiland earned a Class 2 license for waste water collection as part of an EPA mandate. He received a $1,200 wage increase.

Firefighter Alex Campbell has submitted his resignation. He is leaving for Army.

The council accepted the resignation with regret, and thanked Campbell for his service.
