STEM Camp16.certificates WEBARCHBOLD, OHIO – Senator Sherrod Brown recognized forty-four students that participated in Summer STEM Camp at Northwest State. The two week program focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and Manufacturing.

NSCC has provided a series of STEM outreach efforts throughout the region over the past year. NSCC Faculty members have been involved in after-school programs, visits to classrooms, a single day STEM Camp for seventh grade students and the week long summer STEM Camp program at NSCC. The goal of each program is to encourage more middle school students to see the fun behind learning and encourage consideration of STEM based careers that are in high demand in our region. Engineering, Science and Math faculty at NSCC lead the programs which have been made possible through the generous support of Sauder Woodworking (Archbold), GM Powertrain (Defiance), CK Technologies (Montpelier), Automatic Feed Co. (Napoleon), Kamco Industries (West Unity), and Ohio Tech Prep.

“Learning isn’t just about memorization and testing, it is also about reasoning and learning from mistakes,” according to Dr. Dan Burklo, dean of the STEM division at NSCC. “The outreach programs allow students to apply what they have learned and to understand how one error can change an outcome. It is so much fun to watch their eyes light up when they are successful with an activity and to also see their excitement and willingness to go back to the drawing board to figure out what went wrong when an experiment fails. This is the power of learning at its best.”

Ann Longsworth-Orr, NW Ohio representative for Senator Sherrod Brown attended the last day of Summer STEM Camp each week where she encouraged students to consider careers in STEM and to look for all the great career opportunities throughout the state of Ohio.
