“Arlington Cemetery”, was the speech topic of Jim Watkins of Bryan, at the April 1st Northwest Ohio Toastmasters’ meeting. The mansion on the property was built by a step-grandson of George Washington. At one time it was owned by civil war General Lee.

The cemetery was established in 1864. There are 624 acres with 400,000 graves. On average there are 25 burials each day. Any member of the military killed in action or specially decorated, is eligible to be buried at Arlington.

Karen Lyke, of Whitehouse, presented a history speech on the life of Dr. Frances Oldham Kelsey. She was born in British Columbia in 1914. Her masters degree from McGill College was in pharmacology.

She worked at the Food & Drug Administration developing procedures for testing proposed drugs. The drug Thalidomide, which causes birth defects, was successfully opposed by her. She retired from the FDA at the age of 90. (Karen was also the AH counter.)

For table topics, Larry Zuvers of Bryan, asked members to defend news reports about the Easter Bunny and the Ground Hog. Barb Steckly said the Easter Bunny should not be called the Spring Bunny bringing Spring candy to children. Jane Hibbard of Stryker said the Ground Hog’s spring prediction was not cause for a fraud indictment. Jane also was the general evaluator and Barb provided an inspirational close.

Darlene Sheperd, of Bryan and club president, conducted the business meeting and timed speeches. She also provided the word of the day ‘quest’ which is to search for something. The Toastmaster was Barb Steckly who gave examples of April Fool’s pranks.

Guests are always welcome to attend Northwest Ohio Toastmasters’ meetings on the first and third Monday of each month at 6:30 pm in the Allied Health Building Conference Room at Northwest State Community College south of Archbold. For more information contact Larry Zuvers at 419-636-2329 or lzuvers@gmail.com.
