ARCHBOLD, OHIO –The Northwest State Community College Board of Trustees met in regular session February 9. The Board received an update on initiatives at NSCC including an update to the strategic plan, discussion of changes to concealed carry laws related to higher education and an overview of the Advanced Manufacturing Consortium.
The Advanced Manufacturing Consortium was established two years ago by NSCC and has over 60 members representing area manufacturers, hospitals and economic development. The AMC was developed to advance manufacturing by connecting manufacturers to public-private resources in the northwest Ohio region, the state of Ohio, and through the Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) network.
“Manufacturing is the backbone of our region providing thousands of jobs and important tax dollars to our communities,” according to Jim Drewes, director of workforce development at NSCC. “The AMC has been able to offer great educational and training opportunities for area industry leaders that have connected businesses with resources to help enhance operations and support growth for the future.”
In demand job needs of area manufacturing led Northwest State to build the Advanced Manufacturing Training Center in 2015. This state of the art training center supports training that meets the needs for the many businesses throughout the region that are looking for skilled employees. Over $1 million in equipment was purchased through a grant matching program the College secured. The funding for equipment included over $300,000 in donations from area business leaders.
A new law allowing trustees at public colleges to provide provisions that would permit licensed gun owners to carry concealed firearms on campuses was discussed with representatives from the attorney general’s office. The law is scheduled to go into effect in March, 2017. Current policy prohibits firearms on the campus. NSCC has a committee examining the new law, no action was taken.
In board action the 2015-16 College Audit was approved and the board re-elected officers for one-year terms. Paul Siebenmorgen, Fulton County was named chair, Sandra Barber, Fulton County was named vice chair and Jeffrey Erb, Williams County was named second vice chair.
In other board action:
•Approved the promotion of Joel Gibson, Chief of Police.
•Approved the employment of Dawn Hauter, full-time Admissions Recruiter, Jennifer Behnfeldt, full-time Nursing Simulation Laboratory Coordinator and Kristi VonDeylen, full-time Payroll Accountant.
•Approved the retirements of Lou Helsel, full-time Registrar Assistant, Sandra Buchop, full-time Custodian and Gary Kadesch, full-time Engineering Technologies Faculty.
•Approved miscellaneous employment contracts for part-time faculty.

•Approved the financial report for December 31, 2016.
•Approved the 2016-17 Revised Budget
•Appointed Sandra Barber to serve on the Ohio Association of Community Colleges governing board and Sue Derck to serve as alternate.
