“Marathon Running”, was Jim Watkin’s (Bryan) speech topic at the December 3rd Northwest Ohio Toastmasters’ meeting. He said that his wife suggested the idea of a 26.2 mile marathon. Jim had not run a marathon for ten years since Chicago and New York City. He indicated that a training plan was very important and that plans are available on the internet. He said that it is an awesome feeling…

DELTA – The Lady Panthers of Delta must have been feeling confident after three quarters of knocking around the visiting Pettisville Lady Blackbirds on November 27. After taking a three-point lead in the first, the hometown girls parlayed the advantage to 15 at 41-26 after three. This is not hockey however, this is basketball and there are four periods…not three. The Lady Panthers apparently missed that memo, which was just fine for Lauren Hostetler of Pettisville. She led a titanic charge that saw the Lady Panthers’ advantage evaporate under a Blackbird hailstorm. With the score 46-32, the Ladybirds went on…
MONTPELIER – Four days after winning the season opener against North Central, the Montpelier Lady Locomotives spent the first period of their November 27 tilt against Ayersville in a futile search for a field goal. When the buzzer sounded ending the opening frame, the hometown girls were stuck in a 10-1 morass from which they would never extricate themselves in an eventual 50-32 defeat. Hannah Blake led all scorers with 16 points, but her supporting cast was short on contributions to the cause. Lauren Dye was held to just 8 points, while Aleah Maas had 6 points and Christian Prather…
LIBERTY CENTER – Paige Keefer put in 16 of her game-high 18 points in the second half, and Kaela Seiler and Taylor Griffiths each went for double figures as the Fayette Lady Eagles opened 2012-13 hoops play by rearranging Liberty Center on November 26, 70-41. Seiler and Griffiths led an early charge that quickly put the Lady Tigers into the rearview mirror. Fayette turned a nine-point first quarter lead into double digits by the half, never looking back after Keefer joined the bucket brigade after the intermission. Seiler finished with 15 points, while Seiler added 14 and Mikayla Smith added…
HILLTOP – The Hilltop Lady Cadets opened the 2012-13 hoops campaign with balance and bravado in The Bunker. Nine Ladies in Red lit up the scoreboard, four in double digits as the hometown girls slapped a 70-49 pasting on Hicksville on November 24. The Lady Cadets put the game away early, running out to a 21-11 lead after one period, and expanding the lead to 21 at the half. They racked up a 14-3 advantage in assists, hence the balance in scoring that Hicksville simply could not match. Jackie Smith led Hilltop with 15 points, with Emily Armbruster adding 14,…
MONTPELIER – Lauren Dye and Hannah Blake combined for 75 percent of the Montpelier Lady Loco points against North Central on November 23, and three teammates provided the difference as Montpelier tripped the Lady Eagles in the season kickoff, 40-30. Dye canned 17 points and Blake posted 13, the only players from either squad to crack the double-digit barrier. Baylee Hageman landed 6 points, while Aleah Maas and Christina Prather each had 2 points. Sabrina Pickford led the Lady Eagles with 8 points, and Tiana Wheeler dropped in 7 points. Bralyn Wyrick and Hannah Siekemeyer each had a half-dozen, and…
EDON – The beginning of the season can showcase a lot of rust in any sport. If the November 23 season debut of Sydney Stoll was a showcase of rustiness, the rest of the season should be downright scary for anyone facing the Belles in Bomber Blue. Stoll landed a trio of treys and a game-high 25 as the Lady Bombers of Edon thwacked the visiting Hicksville Lady Aces, 49-32. Stoll and Andrea Headley both hit on treys in the first period that saw Edon jumping out to a double-digit lead and never looking back. Headley finished with four trifectas…

Christmas time is an exciting time for children and for those of us who have grandchildren. But it is also a time teacher’s worry about those children they have in class that will not experience normal Christmas. The poverty rate among children is staggering. For many of us: out of sight, out of mind. But for teachers, it’s not out of sight; therefore, very much on their minds. There is no magic wand to wave that will help these children – poverty is an ugly form of social cancer that eats away the joys of childhood. In Williams County alone…
