At its May 6th meeting, the Bryan Board of Public Affairs approved two resolutions highlighting both local infrastructure efforts and the essential role of clean water.

The meeting was called to order at 5 p.m. with all members in attendance, including Mayor Carrie Schlade, Utilities Director Derek Schultz, and Treasurer/Clerk John Lehner.

The board formally recognized National Drinking Water Week, set for May 4-10, 2025, with a resolution honoring the importance of safe drinking water and the staff who help maintain it.

The resolution aligned with a national initiative with the American Water Works Association, which includes over 4,700 public water systems.

Also approved was Resolution 17-2025, authorizing Bryan Municipal Utilities to enter into an $11,688 agreement with GME Testing of Fort Wayne, Indiana. The firm will provide material testing services for the city’s upcoming electric warehouse project.

The testing will include soil inspections, concrete strength, and structural steel evaluations. The agreement is part of a larger Design-Bid-Build initiative overseen by Beilharz Architects and Siebenaler Construction.

Public comments included updates from Schultz, who reported that the treatment plan was completed by May 1st. He also announced a city wide hydrant flushing program set to begin shortly, noting it as part of a standard maintenance schedule.

The flushing is only expected to last anywhere from three to eight minutes per hydrant. Schultz comments that if citizens find dirty water in their home faucets, to keep them running until the water runs clear. If any problems persist, he recommends they call the Utility Office in Bryan for assistance.

Later in the meeting, Mayor Schlade recognized Schultz for receiving the AMP Rising Star award, and board members extended their congratulations.

They also took the time to thank all of the new utility hires for their hard work and dedication. The meeting adjourned at 5:14 p.m.
