The City of Wauseon announced the activation of a new Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon on Friday, April 25. The signal was officially turned on earlier in the week, on Wednesday, April 23, as part of an effort to improve safety for trail users crossing North Shoop Avenue.
The new beacons replace the former yellow flashing signs that have been in place since the early years of the Rails to Trails Revitalization.
Construction on the project began in June 2024 after growing concerns about pedestrian safety at the crossing. Over the years, there have been several close calls involving motorists who failed to yield to pedestrians attempting to cross.
According to Wauseon’s Codified Ordinance 371.0, titled Right of Way in Crosswalk, and the Ohio Revised Code Section 4511.46, drivers are legally required to stop when a pedestrian enters a crosswalk.
The city is asking drivers to be especially mindful of the new system, as this type of beacon is a first for Wauseon.
Regulatory signs have been installed along the roadway to help inform motorists that they must now stop completely when a pedestrian activates the beacon. Pedestrians are also urged to exercise caution and remain alert while crossing the street.
Motorists traveling along North Shoop Avenue should expect the beacons to light up when a trail user presses the activation button located on the sidewalk.
Unlike the previous system, where flashing yellow lights served only as a warning, the new beacons will change to an all-red phase after a few seconds, requiring drivers to come to a complete stop.
City officials encourage residents and visitors to familiarize themselves with the new beacon operation to help ensure the safety of all trail users.
