PRESS RELEASE – Several Delta FFA members participated in Urban and Ag Soil CDE events in September. The FFA soil contest includes rural/ag and urban. These contests are an extension of classroom learning and prepare students to evaluate types of land and soil to determine its potential use.
In the rural/ag contest, students evaluate the land on slope, texture, erosion, natural drainage, land classification and recommended conservation practices.
In the urban contest students evaluate the land on slope, soil stability, flood hazard, water table and bedrock depth. Both of the contests included a written exam and questions about the local soil survey.
In ag/rural soils the Delta team placed 4th, with a score of 1659, in urban soils, the Delta team placed 5th with a score of 1516.
The eight students in ag/rural soils going to districts are: Abbigail Savage (1st place), Hunter Elton (2nd place), Trevor Rohrs (3rd place), Jacob Schlatter (4th place), Jakub Heinemann (5th place), Ryan Graham (6th place), Jensyn Gillen (7th place), and Jayda Graham (8th place).
In total Delta had 26 students competing at County Soils. All individual scores are for our school only. We wish these students the best of luck in their upcoming competition and hope they move onto state.
The eight students in Urban going to districts are Braxton Pennington (1st place), Olivia Siewertsen (2nd place), Payton Reimer (3rd place), Elwin Griewahn (4th place), Willa Rosene (5th place) Layton Fisher (6th place), Ethan Wilson (7th place), and Eve Smith (8th place). In total Delta had 25 students competing at County Soils.
The District 1 Soils CDEs this year was held near Pettisville. The Urban team placed 9th with the following individual placings: Braxton Pennington (8th place), Willa Rosene (34th place), Payton Reimer (39th place), Olivia Siewertsen (46th place), Eve Smith (48th place), Ethan Wilson (70th place), Elwin Griewahn (77th place), Layton Fisher (96th place).
The Ag/Rural team placed 2nd with the following individual placings: Abby Savage (2nd place), Hunter Elton (13th place), Jacob Schlatter (22nd place), Jakub Heinemann (58th place), Jensyn Gillen (78 place), Gracyn Pelton (96th place), Trevor Rohrs (109th place), Allison Earl (121st place). The top five placing teams in the District get to advance to state.
