(Graduated From Edgerton High School In 1950)

Don W. Unger, aged 92, passed away on October 31, 2024, in Bryan, Ohio. Born to Dr. Walter Scott Unger and Minnie Krill Unger on July 21, 1932, Don embarked on a life of dedication to his family.

Don grew up in Melbern, Ohio, and graduated from Edgerton High School in 1950.

Two years later, Don was drafted into the United States Army and served a fifteen-month combat tour in the Korean War, achieving the rank of Sergeant. His military tenure instilled in him a deep sense of duty which he carried throughout his life.

Don trained as an apprentice brick mason, eventually working as a union mason. His career progressed as he took on leadership roles as a construction manager in several construction firms before retiring from Rudolph Libbe Inc. in 1994. Don also embraced his entrepreneurial spirit, managing his farm.

In his personal life, Don was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He married Evelyn N. Carroll on June 14, 1952, and she preceded him in death in 2007.

His family was his pride and joy, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren with whom he loved to spend time.

Don’s passion for travel led him to explore much of the United States, as well as international destinations such as Australia, South America, the United Kingdom, and several Baltic seaports.

In retirement, he built a home on Lake Bartholomew in Coldwater, Michigan. He enjoyed winter in a retirement community in La Feria, Texas, where he volunteered as a group fitness class leader into his late eighties.

Don’s interests included gardening, reading, antique collecting, bicycling, and walking, each reflecting his love for an active, engaging life.

He is survived by his three sons, Doug (Sonya) Unger, Scott (Linda) Unger, and Dennis (Phillip Carter) Unger; seven grandchildren, Benjamin Alexander Sease, Don Andrew Sease, Deana O’Callaghan, Jacob Unger, Anastasia Mirelez, Jason Unger, and Ryan Unger; and eleven great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Nadene Sease; granddaughter Angela Unger; and his brother, Carl Unger.

Visitation for Don will be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, from 10:00 – Noon at Krill Funeral Home, 860 W. Mulberry St., Bryan, Ohio. Funeral services will be held immediately following, with Steve Rath officiating. Burial will follow at Shiffler Cemetery in Bryan.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
