 (Resident Of Swanton)

Donald James Gilbert, age 73, of Swanton, Ohio, sadly left us on February 9, 2024. Don was born to Robert S. Gilbert, Sr. and Regina E. Gilbert on September 8, 1950 in Toledo, Ohio.

He was a 1968 graduate of DeVilbiss High School and received an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration from The University of Toledo shortly thereafter.

Don was an avid singer & drummer, along with his guitar playing brother John, in their band called “The Living End”.

In 1971 Don was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and suffered with this debilitating illness until his death. He spent several years in and out of hospitals and group homes until he took to living on the streets in downtown Toledo until 1988.

At this point in his life, he obtained a one-bedroom apartment through Section 8 housing where he resided until 2010.  Early in 2010, he fell and broke his back which required surgery and rehabilitation.

His brother Bob was his caretaker and made arrangements for him to rehab in Swanton Healthcare, which was close to his home. This is where Don resided until his death.

Don was preceded in death by both of his parents, his stepmother, Virginia Gilbert and sister-in-law, Sue Gilbert.

Don is survived by his sister, Nancy (David) Brandon of Freeport, Illinois; brother, John Gilbert of Hudson, Indiana and brother, Bob (Sue) Gilbert of Delta, Ohio; along with several nieces and nephews.

Private family entombment and committal services will be held at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park where Don will be laid to rest next to his mother.

Arrangements have been entrusted with Barnes Funeral Chapel and Crematory, 5825 St Hwy 109, Delta, Ohio 43515.

Those wishing to express their sympathy may do so by making a donation to The Cherry Street Mission, 105 17th Street, Toledo, Ohio 43604 or any other organization that serves/assists the Homeless Community. Please visit www.barnesfuneralchapel.com to send condolences to Don’s family.
