Seventy-five Edon High School band and choir members have the opportunity next spring to embark on a journey to Washington D.C. Students will travel on charter buses and spend the next few days visiting ten memorials and many other significant historical sites in the city such as Arlington Cemetery, the White House, Capitol Building, National Archives, Ford Theater, Peterson Home and Smithsonian Museums. They will perform at two of the sites.
During the trip to Arlington Cemetery, representatives from the Edon music program will be laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. To be chosen to participate in this event is a distinct honor for Edon’s band and choir members. The ritual of wreath laying is often done by organizations or public figures such as the President or his designee who lay a wreath on Memorial and Veteran’s Day. Honoring lost soldiers in this way definitely will be one of the highlights of the trip and something the students will remember forever.
Between seeing the sites, students will also have the opportunity to dine at famous places such as the Hard Rock Café, Union Station and Buca Bi Beppo. For fun, they will be visiting Fashion City Mall and take in the popular theater production of “Sheer Madness”.
Fundraising efforts to date have reduced the cost of the trip per student to $350. This amount is still out of the reach of many of our students’ ability to cover. We are looking for help from anyone or business interested in donating. Donating can be helping to assist students with scholarships or just something to help reduce the overall cost of each individual student.
Donations can be sent to Edon Northwest Local Schools at 802 West Indiana Street, Edon OH 43518. For further information or to have any questions answered, please feel free to contact Cathy Frastaci, Choir Director at 419-272-3213, extension 1416.
