She spent many years as volunteer nurse with Lake James Christian Assembly. Evelyn enjoyed her family and making her baked beans for family get-togethers, traveling and spending winters in Florida with her husband, golf and bowling.

Evelyn M. Gearhart was born on May 5, 1925, in Pleasant Lake, Indiana, the daughter of George Washington and Lena (VanPelt) Van Zile. She married Richard H. Gearhart on September 22, 1944, in Metz, Indiana, and he preceded her in death on August 30, 2003.

Survivors include two sons, Lon Gearhart, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Leon (Debbie) Gearhart, of Bryan; one daughter, Janet Gearhart, of Defiance, Ohio; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Orren (Helen) Van Zile, of Montpelier, Ohio; and one sister, Mary Lou Noll, of Cincinnati, Ohio. Preceding her in death in addition to her husband were three brothers, Edsel, Lorren and Berton Van Zile.
