A day after the North Central Schools canceled the remainder of their junior high football season due to low numbers, Evergreen Local Schools announced they are doing the same with the JV football program.
“According to OHSAA rules, football players may only play a total of 50 quarters per season. A “quarter” is counted as playing in two or more consecutive plays during the period”, stated Superintendent Eric Smola in a press release issued tonight.
“Unfortunately, due to the low number of high school students participating in this year’s football program and player injuries, many of our players are participating in both JV and Varsity games. Based on current playing time, numerous players have the potential to become ineligible before the end of the season.”
“This reality would cause Evergreen to forfeit upcoming league games. In order to comply with OHSAA player eligibility, Evergreen will be suspending the JV football program beginning Monday, September 6, 2021 through the end of the 2021-2022 season.”
“We are disappointed to make this decision, and we value the continued efforts of all members within the program. Every Viking is essential to the program. While we may be small in numbers, we are strong in grit and determination”, he concluded.
