Florence V. Miller (1917 – 2016)

Florence V. Miller, 99 years, of West Unity since 2009, and a former life-long resident of Hummelstown, Pennsylvania, passed away Sunday, March 26, 2017 in her present home with her family at her side.

Florence was born August 24, 1917 in Hummelstown, Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late Lester E. and Edna (Weaver) Shertzer. She was a 1935 graduate of Hummelstown High School. She married Maurice M. Miller on July 2, 1938 in Hummelstown, Pennsylvania, and he preceded her in death on June 23, 1998.

Florence started working at the Hershey Chocolate Factory wrapping candy bars. She then became a cashier at Lynn’s Market and later she had worked at Olmstead Air Force Base, and ended her career as a clerical worker for the United States Department of Agriculture, retiring in 1974. Florence was the oldest living member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Hummelstown where she served in many capacities, such as Superintendent of the Junior Department at church, Missionary Society, Historical Society and Golden Age Club, Kitchen Band Member of Kazoo’s and Piano, Women’s Society, Cheerful Givers. She also donated her time and talents in making several banners for the church, which are still enjoyed by the congregation. She was also a member of the Hummelstown Quilt Club, Hummelstown Flower Club where she served as a State of Pennsylvania certified Flower Judge and judged several state flowers shows. She was involved in the 1994 commemorative quilt for Hummelstown, making the drawings and design of the quilt. She had also made a quilt for Bethany Village and a banner for Union Deposit’s canal celebration. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, tatting, gardening, flowers and making several items for her family. Florence was also a Brownie Scout Leader, where she found great joy in teaching and training the girls.

Surviving is her daughter-in-law, Nancy Miller of West Unity, Ohio; two granddaughters, Suzanne (William) Geis of West Unity, Ohio and Paula (Richard) Mohr of Massillon, Ohio; five great-grandchildren, Kelly and Katie Geis; Mathew, John and Mason Mohr. She was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice; one son, Glenn Miller; one brother, George Shertzer and one sister, M. Lucille Shertzer.
