Lyman O. Critchfield was born in 1862 and was raised in Jefferson Township. At one time he operated a grocery store in Pioneer and also transported U.S. mail from Bryan to Pioneer in a horse-drawn wagon. In 1901, Critchfield purchased 117.98 acres in the northeast quarter of Section 21, Pulaski Township, for $6,000. Critchfield sold this farm parcel in 1911. Lyman Critchfield passed away at his Bryan home on November 16, 1941, at the age of 78. Critchfield’s former farm is today the site of the Bryan Commercial and Industrial Park. This circa 1910 picture postcard from the Kevin Maynard collection is believed to show Critchfield’s Pulaski Township farm. “L. O. Critchfield 1909” is painted on the large barn. None of the individuals in the photograph are identified. Do you have a historic Williams County Historic photo you would like to share? Email: publisher@thevillagereporter. com.
