The Lyons Village Council met for its regular meeting on Monday, March 1, where members discussed several improvement projects underway within the village.
Topping the project list is the renovation of the existing basketball courts and skate park at the Lyons Community Ball Park. This spring, the site will be updated to include new pickleball and basketball courts.
While most of the $65,000 improvements will be covered by grant funds, volunteers are needed to assist with the project and to meet grant specifications.
Residents or organizations wishing to help with the project should contact the village office to be added to the contact list.
Other park improvements include possible replacement and addition of new lights. Village officials are exploring lighting options to improve their park aesthetics and usability, as well as to provide savings on electrical expenses.
Residents can also expect to see more lighting throughout the village during the winter months, as an order was placed for new holiday decor.
Thirteen new lighted decorations will replace the previous aging decor.
Officials also said that demolition of an abandoned home will move forward now that the weather has improved. The removal of the structure at 210 North Adrian Street was delayed due to the recent snow events.
Committees continue to study and plan for the upcoming water tower improvement and water line replacement project, and plan to apply for more grant opportunities to help fund the project.
Council also agreed to schedule the 2021 village clean up day for the fall, as there was more participation during that time of year after being delayed due to COVID-19 than when it was previously held in the spring.
Information will be shared with residents as it becomes available. Other announcements for Lyons residents include:
●Emergency housing and utility assistance is available through a state program during the coronavirus pandemic. Applications may be picked up at the village office.
●The Lyons Christian Church’s Easter Egg Hunt is tentatively scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 27. It will be held at the Lyons Community Ball Park, pending any cancellation due to changes in the coronavirus situation.
The next meeting of the Lyons Village Council is Monday, April 5. Residents wishing to attend should call ahead to the village office to ensure ample seating to meet social distancing guidelines.
