Mary Avonne (Barnes) Oyer, age 90, of Wauseon, passed away on October 10, 2022, in Toledo. Mary was born on December 6, 1931, in Wauseon to the late Clyde and Ilah (Andrews) Barnes.
On June 12, 1955, Mary married Vernon John Oyer, who survives.
Mary was a lifelong member of Wauseon. Mary attended Bluffton College for a teaching certificate, and later obtaining and Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree of Education from Defiance College.
Mary began her teaching career and Pike Township School (Pike-Delta-York). She then took years off from teaching to raise her family.
She returned to Wauseon’s Elm Street Elementary School, retiring after an additional 28 years at Elm Street teaching kindergarten thru third grade, mostly in kindergarten.
Mary taught piano lessons to area children and adults for many years. She was very active for many years with various community services, boards, and committees.
She was an active member of Crossroads and served in many capacities and participating in numerous music ministries.
Surviving Mary is her husband, Vernon; children, Beth (John) Nafziger, Bonnie (Dan) Zink, and Brent (Crystal) Oyer; grandchildren, Chris Flucklinger, Ashley Oyer, Daniel Oyer, Nicholas Zink, Evan Farnsworth, Gregory Zink, and Michelle Lupo; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Brenda Farnsworth; and granddaughter, Chantal Farnsworth.
Visitation for Mary will take place on Saturday, November 5, 2022, in the chapel at Crossroads Church of Wauseon from 1pm-3pm. A memorial service will take place immediately following visitation. Inurnment will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, Cherry Street Mission of Toledo, or Crossroads Church of Wauseon.
