Nettie Smethurst (1923-2019)

Nettie Ellen Smethurst, 96, of Montpelier, passed away on Friday, June 14, 2019 at Hillside Country Living in rural Bryan.

She was born on June 4, 1923 in Mountain Grove, Missouri to Elbert A. and Stella M. (Middleton) Wiyrick. Nettie Ellen graduated from Montpelier High School in 1941.

Nettie Ellen worked as an LPN for Montpelier Hospital and Bryan Medical Group for 33 years retiring in 1985. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Montpelier.

Nettie Ellen is survived by her three children, Dean (Sue) Smethurst of Montpelier, Barbara Zulch of Montpelier and Virginia Montoya of Arlington, Washington; 8 grandchildren, Kristen (Robert), Kimberly (Mike), Ted (Nasseam), Lisa (Larry), Kent (Bridget), Kaia (Nathan), Yvonne (Chris) and Angela; 20 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; sister, Cleeta Miller of Montpelier; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Theodore “Ted” Smethurst; grandson, Bill Zulch; two sons-in-law, Jerry Zulch and Dennis Montoya; brothers, Carl Wiyrick and Duane Mowry; and sister, Marie Hill.


Visitation for Nettie Ellen will be held on Sunday, June 16th from 12-4pm at the Thompson Funeral Home on Main Street in Montpelier. A funeral service will take place on Monday at 11am at the funeral home with Pastor Justin McCall to officiate. Donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church or Hillside Country Living Activity Fund.
