The Pike-Delta-York Local School District Board of Education recognized students for their performance in the classroom, on the athletic field, and beyond during their monthly meeting Wednesday.
First to be recognized was Kennedy Chadwick – a second-grade student at Delta Elementary School and that school’s student of the month.
Chadwick’s teacher Kim Mewborn said in a letter that she supported Chadwick because the young student is always polite, kind, and caring, and a good friend to her classmates.
“Her sweet nature makes her a positive addition to our school,” Mewborn wrote, “Kennedy shows respect to adults and other students.”
“She understands the importance of self-control and can always be trusted to do what’s right. She listens intently, participates in class, and always does her best. Kennedy consistently turns in her homework and classwork on time.”
“She’s willing to put forth extra effort to make her work the best that it can be. I’ve enjoyed watching her grow as a student this year.”
“Her excellent behavior and positive attitude make her an excellent example for those around her. For these reasons and many more, Kennedy deserves to be student of the month.”
A whopping seven teachers wrote statements in support of Delta Middle School’s student of the month – sixth-grade student Jayden Spiess.
Scott Tenney, Spiess’ physical education teacher, said Spiess “has always been and continues to be a hard worker in PE but has vastly improved his fifth-grade year in both maturity and manners.”
“He has shown leadership skills in team settings and has had success both in the classroom and in his extracurricular activities.”
Tenney said that with Spiess’ combination of a growth mindset and great work ethic, he will accomplish great things.
“Perseverance is the first word that comes to mind working with Jayden,” social studies teacher Peggy Smith said. “He is a student who works very hard every day, even when he encounters personal obstacles.”
Smith was one of three teachers to mention Spiess’ perseverance. Other traits that came up in multiple statements were “work ethic,” “determined,” and “kind.”
Ron Zdunczyk said Spiess is a “polite, respectful young man, kind and considerate to everyone he meets, constantly participating in class discussions and doing his best work. He’s a driven person who’s going to do great things in the classroom, as an athlete, and in life.”
The student of the month at Delta High School – freshman Clarence Taft – was not present to receive his award.
ATHLETIC RECOGNITION
The board recognized a series of student athletes, who received accolades from the Northwest Ohio Athletic League (NWOAL).

Boys Basketball: Justin Ruple – NWOAL 2nd Team All-League, District 7 Academic and Honorable Mention, NWOAL Silver Scholar Athlete; Jude Gibbons – Academic District 7 D3, NWOAL Silver Scholar Athlete; Luke Reinhard – Academic and Honorable Mention District 7 D3, NWOAL Silver Scholar Athlete
Alex York – All-League NWOAL Honorable Mention.
Girls Basketball: Grace Munger – All-League NWOAL Honorable Mention, 2nd Team District 7 D3; Kate Friess – All-League NWOAL Honorable Mention, District 7 D3 Honorable Mention, NWOAL Silver Scholar Athlete; Kendall Sprow – All-League NWOAL Honorable Mention; Ella Demaline – NWOAL Scholar Athlete; Ashlyn Lamb – NWOAL Scholar Athlete; Olivia Smith – NWOAL Scholar Athlete.

The board also recognized participants in the National History Day competition.
