Russell Shetler, Sr. (1939 – 2024)

Russell E. Shetler Sr., age 84 of Montpelier, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 24, 2024, at Vancrest of Hicksville.

He was born on Nov. 8, 1939, to Oliver “Ed” and Helen (Lirot) Shetler in Bryan, Ohio.

Russ was a 1957 graduate of Bryan High School. On April 12, 2003, he married Susan Alven, who preceded him in death in October, 2023.

Russ was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was a lifelong insurance agent, most recently with Kannel Insurance Company.


He enjoyed watching hummingbirds and writing poetry. He entered and won an Editor’s Choice Award for Outstanding Achievement in Poetry at Poetry.com. Russ will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Russ is survived by his children, Dwayne (Jannean) Shetler of Sherwood, Roxanne (Kim) Shetler of Empire, Michigan, and Russell E. (Dot) Shetler Jr. of Troy, Ohio. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren, Amanda Shingelton, James Shetler, Parry Shetler, Kristine Sees, Katie Gay, Alex Shetler and Isaac Shetler; 12 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Deb (Jack) Podgorny of Rome City, Indiana.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver “Ed” and Helen Shetler, and his wife, Susan Shetler.


A private graveside burial will be held at a later date at Maple Grove Cemetery in Edgerton, Ohio. Schaffer Funeral Home was honored to assist the family with arrangements.
