Samuel Steffes (1947 – 2024)

 (1965 Graduate Of Edon High School)

Samuel J. Steffes, age 76, of Edon, Ohio, passed away at 10:55 A.M. on Monday, April 22, 2024, at the Evergreen Healthcare Center where he had been a patient.

Samuel was a graduate of the 1965 class of Edon High School, in Edon, Ohio. After graduation he attended Bowling Green State University and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in elementary education.

He then went for his Master’s degree at University of Saint Francis, in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. He was employed with Edon School District from 1971 to 2006.

While teaching he volunteered his time as an EMT for Edon EMS as well as coaching cross country for many Edon students.


After retirement he continued substitute teaching at many schools in Williams County. Sam was the mayor of Edon, Ohio from 1992-2001 and participated on the city council, acting as administrator during this time.

Samuel was an active member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Blakeslee, Ohio, where he was known to play the organ. Above all Samuel was a proud father and grandfather to his two children and his four custodial granddaughters.

Samuel J. Steffes was born on November 21, 1947, in Edon, Ohio, the son of Basil and Frances (Stoy) Steffes.


He married Barbara A. Vince on June 14, 1969, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Blakeslee, and she preceded him in death on February 5, 2022.

Surviving Samuel is his son, James Steffes; daughter, Rachel Kaylor; granddaughters, Emily Kaylor, Hannah (Heath) Brown, Allison and Ashley Kaylor; sisters, Agnes Stoker, Barbara (Joseph) Shankster, and Nancy (Ron) Risedorph; brothers, Raymond (Barbara) Steffes, John Steffes, George (Barbara) Steffes; sister-in-law, Sally Steffes; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sam was preceded by his wife; parents; brothers, Joseph, Richard, and Clarence; and his sister, Loretta.


Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 25, from 3:00-7:00 P.M. in the Krill Funeral Home, 204 West Indiana Street, Edon, with recitation of the rosary at 7:00 P.M. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, April 26, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 625 Washington Street, Blakeslee, Ohio. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery near Blakeslee.

Memorials are requested to the Walz Park Playground Project in care of the Village of Edon, Edon School District, or Saint Joseph Catholic Church.
