Saralee A. Handy (1964-2013)

Saralee A. Handy 48, of Edon died Wednesday morning following a car accident in Dekalb County Indiana. She was born on April 22, 1964 in Montpelier to Joseph A. and Barbara S. (Steffes) Shankster. Saralee graduated from Edon High School in 1982 and then earned her B.S. in education from The University of Toledo in 1987. On August 11, 1990 she married Randel L. Handy in Montpelier, and he survives.

Saralee was actively involved in the Edon High School Golf program as well as the Edon Music Boosters, she served as the chair person for the Edon High School Band uniform fund and was often referred to as “Mom” by the high school students. She had recently started working for Busche, Inc in Kendallville as a machinist. Prior to that she worked at D.M.I. in Edon for 19 years, starting in 1994, and had also worked at Winzeler Stamping in Montpelier.

Saralee is survived by her husband Randel, parents Joe and Barb Shankster of Edon, two daughters Courtney L. Handy and fiancé Andrew L. Loughborough of Edon, Chelsey L. Handy of Edon, and brother Steven (Paula) Shankster of Butler Indiana.

She was preceded in death by two brothers Bobby Joe Shankster in April 1961 and an infant brother in May of 1963.

Visitation hours for Saralee will be Sunday February 3rd from 2-8pm at the Thompson Funeral Home in Montpelier. Services will be on Monday at 11am at the funeral home with Father Fred Duschl to officiate. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Blakeslee. Donations may be made to the Edon High School Golf program or the Edon High School Band Uniform fund. Online condolences can be made at www.thethompsonfuneralhome.com
