When Mel Honig retired he knew he wanted to do something meaningful with his time. He had run successful businesses and wanted to put his many talents to good use.

As a District 6600 Rotarian, Mel became involved with Resource Centers International, a MASA project assisting to provide learning resources to underprivileged people outside the United States.

Mel was involved with the work in Belize and Jamaica, providing donated items such as books and computers to children. Mel has seen first hand the difference some of these resources make in the lives of children. He also understands that the largest impact is made with children at a very young age. Many of the children served by this program will begin the learning process at 3 to 5 years of age. He has also learned that family support is very important, so the schools often involve the parents in the learning process of the children. Children naturally love to learn and thrive in the proper environment.
