Stryker Village Council Approves Rezoning Request For Dollar General Store Site

A representative of a firm that wants to purchase some land south of downtown Stryker to build a Dollar General store has asked the Village Council to rezone it.

Bob Gage of GBT Realty of Tennessee, wants the parcel, across from the school track, for a 9,100-square foot Dollar General store on a1.7-acre site. The property would need to be rezoned from residential to commercial to allow construction.

The council approved the Planning Commission’s recommendation to rezone the proposed Dollar General site. The building will have 30 parking spaces and two Dumpsters inside a wood fence. The north and south property lines would have 6-foot wood privacy fences.

The site would have a 21-foot tall Dollar General sign on the north side of the driveway. The store would be supplied via truck. The driveway and parking lot will be large enough to allow the truck to remain in the lot.

Light pollution won’t be a problem, Gage said. The parking lot will be well lit, but the ambient light will only be one lumen at the property line, he said.

The site will have a retention pond and a water quality pond to make sure runoff is cleaned before going back into the storm drains.

The council approved updates to the codified ordinances and declared an emergency so it would go into immediate effect.

Residents will have to separate leaves from sticks, stones and other debris this fall. The village has a rebuilt leaf vacuum and does not want it damaged, Administrator Alan Riegsecker said. Anyone who does not separate debris from their leaves will get a tag placed on their door, he said.

“We are going to start out fresh,” Riegsecker said.

No date has been set for leaf pickup, he said.

Two dead dangerous trees have been removed.

Bumpouts proposed at Lynn and Defiance streets can be put in before or after ODOT does its work on Main Street next year.

Mayor Joey Beck said the bumpouts are something the village is considering, but doesn’t want to do anything that will be pointless.

“That’s definitely something we’re trying to see if we need to do,” Beck said.

Police Chief Steve Schlosser said he is trying to get the word out to local chiefs about the department’s new dog, Rocco.

Schlosser thanked the Finance Committee for adding a third full-time officer so the department can be available 24 hours a day. The committee also approved 75 cents an hour more for officers.

While reporting the monthly stats, Schlosser said he gives his officers the freedom to decide whether to issue a warning on a traffic stop or a citation. In September, officers gave out one citation and 39 warnings.

“I am not a big fan of written citations,” Schlosser said. “I think you can do more with a warning to garner that respect than to hurt someone in their pocketbook.”

A citation can cost a driver up to $140 in Bryan Municipal Court with the village only seeing $6 of that, Schlosser said.

“That’s an atrocity as far as I am concerned,” he said. “If my officers never write another citation, you won’t have any complaints out of me.”

Council member Terry Weiland announced his resignation as he and his wife will be moving to Bryan.

The village may need to increase water and sewer appropriations to pay for repairs. Fiscal officer Beth Rediger said she did not plan for the added costs.

The CHP dinner and charity auction is 6:30-9:30 p.m., Oct. 20 at the Williams County Veterans Memorial at the Fairgrounds.

Friends of the Stryker Library are hosting a party at the library.

The 20th anniversary celebration is 1:30-4:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5.

There will be a raffle of a painting by Doug Fiely. It is 31 by 25 inches and can be seen at the library. Tickets can be purchased there or from any member of the Friends of the Stryker Library. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult at this event.

Raffle tickets are $1 each or six for $5.

There will be games, prizes and snacks inside and out.

The Friends group is also having a membership drive for 2017. Memberships cost as little as $10. Lifetime memberships cost $1,000 and business memberships are $25. Contact any Friends member for more information or visit the group’s Facebook page.
