Archbold, Ohio — Sauder Village will honor tradition Saturday, Sept. 21 with two exciting events: Vintage Base Ball Tournament and World Spin in Public Day.
Join the Sauder Village Windmills, Black Swamp Frogs and Spiegel Grove Squires for a day at the ball field as we go back in time and celebrate the origins of America’s favorite pastime, baseball (originally spelled base ball).
Observe the differences between baseball then and now. Our teams will use rules from the 1860s — when the game first became a staple in popular culture — and will sport historically accurate uniforms, hit with wooden bats and catch without mitts. The tournament will commence at 11 a.m., with subsequent games at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
“Sauder Village would like to take you out to the ball game on Sept. 21st as three teams go head, to head, to head, for the coveted Sauder Village vintage base ball trophy,” said Matthew Walls, Village Education Manager.
“Guests will be able to cheer for their favorite team while enjoying a delicious treat from the 1920’s Soda Fountain. Don’t miss your chance to root, root, root, for the Black Swamp Frogs, Spiegel Grove Squires and Sauder Village Windmills, when Sauder Village hosts its vintage base ball game this fall.”
The Wauseon High School Band will keep the energy high during the first two games by playing historically appropriate songs, along with a few recognizable modern baseball classics. Guests are encouraged to bring their own seating.
In between games, make your way to the Village Green for our World Spin in Public Day celebration, which will be happening all day.
Learn from expert and beginner spinners as they use antique and modern wheels to transform wool into yarn. Guests can even try their hand at using a drop spindle.
Local spinners are invited to bring their wheels and spindles; Register in advance at saudervillage.org.
“Give spinning a try during World Spin in Public Day,” said Deb Ridgway, Adult Education Manager. “Discover the feel of merino wool roving as it slides through your fingers and transforms into yarn!”
Both of these family-friendly, educational events are included with the price of daily admission to Sauder Village.
