The CBS Study Club held their monthly meeting at Hillside Country Living on October 3rd with thirteen members present. Halloween centerpieces and little pumpkins decorated the tables. Hostess, Pauline Brillhart, served delicious orange jello and her special spice cake.

Devotions were given by Lucy Pitts. She read “When We Don’t Feel Like Praying” from the Guidepost Handbook of Prayer.

The roll call was a fall memory. The beautiful fall colors seemed to help the members to recall many memorable experiences.

A thank you was read from the See and Do for the September food donation. The food donations for this month will go to the Bryan Out Reach.

Happy Birthday was sung to Donna Jean Bistline and Jean Brillhart.

The program was given by jean Young. The theme for this year is “Contemporary Women’s Authors”.
Lisa Tawn Bergren, a bestselling, award winning author of over 30 books will be the first author to be discussed this year. She lives in Colorado Springs, Colorado with her husband and three children. She has written for children, teens and adults. Her travels have taken her too many countries.

The book selected for this program is a historical novel, “The Captain’s Bride” from her Northern Lights Trilogy. The year is 1880 and the setting is Bergen, Norway. The captain Peder Ronstad just married Elsa Anders and they with their closest friends are setting sail for America. The friends include Kaastjie Jansen, who is seeking a new beginning for the sake of her marriage and the child within her. Perder’s special friend Karl Martensen, first mate of the ship, is tormented by emotions that threaten to ruin them all while Tora, Elsa’ younger sister, a young vixen who knows exactly what she wants and how to get it.

The characters take us from Camden, Maine where they start a ship building enterprise to South Dakota with farming projects, and then to Seattle with a logging project. The adventurous Tora also becomes involved with the progress of the railroad from Minnesota to Alaska.

As you read Lisa’ books, you will find that she is a master at presenting characters that become real to you and situations and events that involve you. You will not want to lay her books down. The other two books in the trilogy are “Deep Harbor” and “Midnite Sun”. When you start reading, you will see the Northern Lights in Norway and when you finish reading, you will really seem them in Alaska.

At the end of the presentation, each member received a personalized book mark made by Love Bug Creations of Bryan.
