In amongst all the regular type items dealt with at school board meetings, Stryker School Board was informed at the August 16, 2021 meeting that Stryker district 6th graders will now be allowed to play Jr. High Football and be Jr. High Football Cheerleaders.

Superintendent Nate Johnson was happy to inform them that as the group in which the school participates for football is not under OHSAA, the grades are not listed for Jr. High, thus allowing them to include the 6th grade students who want to participate.

This was a fairly recent change so students will need to get their athletic physicals before they can participate, but he said that two boys already showed an interest and he is sure there will be more.

One of the Superintendent’s recommendations which the board approved, was “the additions and updates, adding 6th grade to Jr. High Football and Jr. High Football Cheerleading only, to the handbooks for the 2021-22 school year.

Other recommendations approved were “the scheduled bus routes and authorize the Transportation Supervisor and Superintendent to make changes as necessary during the 21-22 school year,” and “the 21-22 Four County Student Transportation agreement with North Central schools.” This agreement has been in place for ten or twelve years and the cost is the same.

The Superintendent’s Personnel Recommendations, which were all approved, included:

– Resignations of Brendan Boyd, coach effective July 28, 2021 and Lauren Frey, teacher effective July 11, 2021.
-Employment contract for Trudy Partee as long term sub for one year, beginning with the 21-22 school year
-Classified/Certified substitute in Food Service – Sheri House and Lori Morre

In other business, the Board approved the meeting agenda and the minutes of the June 28, 2021 meeting. With Treasurer Jill Peters absent, Mr. Johnson reported that the General fund cash balance for July was $8,035,809.58, Total Revenue was $561,397.68 and the Total Expenses were $440,717.55.

The Board voted to accept all of her recommendations as well which were:

-Donation of $547.50 from Oberlin Farms Demo and Recycling for Stryker School
-Student Activity and Athletic Purpose and Budget statements
-Amended Certificate of Estimated Resources
-Close the Senior Class of 2021 Fund

Dean of Students, Beth Mohr, reported that the teachers had Staff Training on August 10 and 11 for the Branching Minds program and on August 16 for the STAR/Renaissance program.

She said they went well and the teachers and staff were all ready for school to start. Otis Spunkmeyer Cookie Sales kickoff is August 20th.

Dave Schultz, principal, reported the following:

Sauder Village

-August 17 – Teacher Work Day with Open House from 4-6 p.m.; Athletics: Meet the Teams Night was also held at 6:30 in the Athletic Complex
-August 18 – First Day for students
-September 1 and 3 are School Pictures
-September 2 – Josten’s Sr. and Soph. Meetings at 8:30 and 9:15 a.m.
-September 6 and 13 – NO SCHOOL for Labor Day and Fair Day

He wished all the Fall sports teams good luck and shared that Golf opened at Toledo Christian on August 5th, Volleyball opens with Liberty Center on August 21, Cross Country opens at Defiance Invite on August 28, and Football starts with a Home Game against Danbury on August 20.

Reminders were given that the September meeting will be held on a Tuesday night as the Fair and Band Show are on the Monday. So it is scheduled for Tuesday, November 14, 2021.

The School District Levy Renewal, not a new funding request, will be on the November 2 ballot. In other info, Superintendent Johnson informed them that later in the week the Athletic Director would be announcing that Special Event Nights will be held this year for Stryker students only and will be free.

Stryker Athletic Boosters

Also there have been new TP and paper towel dispensers put in throughout the buildings. It was determined that the district was spending $1500 a year on batteries for the dispensers so now they will save money and they are easy to use.
