Residents enjoyed an evening of award-winning baloney sliders, homemade pies accompanied by music and poetry on March 24 at the Fayette’s Historic Opera House’s Pie-Loney Night.

Ken Thatcher, the chef of the evening, fried up the baloney sliders that featured the three winning entries from the “Your Full of Baloney Night” competition held earlier in the month. Thatcher’s Bean Creek Baloney took first place out of 18 entries, while Brookview Farm’s Garlic Baloney and Pettisville Meats Jalapeno and Cheese Baloney tied for second place. Thatcher said that his recipe is a combination of beef and pork. He’s perfected his recipe over 30 years. Thatcher said he’s been processing meat or preparing it since 1970.

Tom Spiess, director of the Fayette Community Fine Arts Council, announced that Pie-Loney night was a trial run for the “Thick as a Mule’s Lip Baloney Emporium” (dedicated to preserving and encouraging the growth of hot baloney sandwiches), which will make its debut at the 2015 Bull Thistle Arts Festival. These award-winning baloneys will be served up by celebrity chefs at the Mule’s Lip Baloney Bar in the University Gallery at the Fayette Opera House.

In addition to sampling the delicious baloney sliders, patrons were treated to musical performances and poetry readings featuring some of the Bean Creek Coffee House’s top performers, including Dennis Wasnich, Steve Snider, Ed Jarzembski, Aubrie Calvin, John Huffman and Collen Rufenacht.

Proceeds from Pie-Loney Night were split between the Fayette Opera House and the Bean Creek History Center.

The next event at the Fayette Opera House features Hand Hewn String Band on April 11 at 7:30 pm. For details and information about other upcoming events visit their website at http://www.operahouse-fayette.org or like them on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/Fayette.Ohio
