WAUSEON – Wauseon senior football player Tyson Rodriguez recently committed to join the Toledo Rockets football team as a preferred walk-on.

“The coaches and the recent success Toledo has had”, Rodriguez detailed as reasons for choosing Toledo. “It is also close to home, and I like the campus and it feels like a perfect fit for me”, he added.

Rodrguez, who will be a business major, said he enjoyed the recruiting process. “The recruiting process was fun. It’s fun to have coaches reaching out and building relationships.”

“It’s also a little stressful because you want to give all the coaches respect and not blow anyone off.”

Rodriguez received plenty of accolades this season on both sides of the ball by being named the NWOAL Offensive Player of the Year, was first team all-league at wide receiver, defensive back, and kicker, was named 1st team all-district at wide receiver and defensive back and was picked 1st team All-Ohio as a receiver and was 2nd team All-Ohio at defensive back.

Toledo is coming off an 11-3 season in 2023 that included its second straight trip to the MAC Championship Game and its third consecutive bowl appearance.

The Rockets, who were ranked as high as No. 23 in the AP poll, went 8-0 in league play for the first time in its history, and were the first MAC school with a clean slate in seven years.

Since Head Coach Jason Candle’s first full season in 2016, Toledo has won 64 games, the most of any school in the MAC.
