The Wauseon Board of Education held its meeting on Friday, April 12th. The meeting began at 1:01 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance. With no additions made to the agenda, Mrs. Jennifer Grime spoke to the board about a class option that has been available to 7th and 8th graders.

This class is sort of like a Home Economics course and features family/consumer sciences. Examples of some of the different units done in the class were gone over, along with life skills learned and field trips taken.

The class has been held for three years now, with more and more students wanting to take the class. Space, however, has been a limiting factor, with only 16 students being accepted into the class.

Superintendent Troy Armstrong, at the end of the presentation, stated their goal of expanding opportunities for more students.

Primary School Principal Mr. Blake Young spoke next about what it means to be a Wauseon Indian at the Primary School.

Mr. Young iterated a sentiment that had taken hold of the school when he first started, which revolved around the fact the primary school was off on its own and not on the same campus as other schools.

Mr. Young’s plan has been to change this mindset and make the school atmosphere feel more like it is on the same campus as the other schools, in order to build up Wauseon Pride.

It was then that the board moved on to hear a presentation given by Superintendent Armstrong regarding a preview of software made by the company called BoardBook.

It was explained that this software will simplify just about everything as it pertains to making the meeting agendas, holding board meetings, and compiling meeting minutes. Minutes were then approved by the board before moving on to the financial report.

Reports were given which included a list of donations, appropriations, and a request to purchase a new school bus.

The stock school bus unit will be available this fall, which is much quicker than the normal 12-18 months. A fund reserve policy was then discussed due to conversations taking place in the state government.

It was stated some schools have seen higher cash reserves due to COVID money, but that the issue has not been experienced in Wauseon.

Next, a lease purchase option was discussed in regard to several capital improvement projects the school is looking at having funded.

Some of these projects include renovating the high school auditorium, fixing up the girls’ softball field, and the creation of a new bus garage.

All of the projects currently being looked at come in for a total amount of $3.5 million to $4 million. Going the lease purchase route would address all issues fairly quickly.

Lastly, the board approved items listed under the superintendent’s report, including personnel items and a Memorandum of Understanding.

This MOU was for the salary schedule of employees who have prior military experience. With no other items to attend to, the meeting was adjourned at 2:04 p.m.
