STRYKER HISTORY … Sue Buehrer points to a picture of the Medal of Honor earned by Stryker resident, William J. Knight, during the Civil War. The actual medal is in the possession of Knight’s descendants. They had once brought the medal to Stryker. Sue related to the students that it was a very moving experience for her to have touched the medal that had been pinned onto William J. Knight by President Abraham Lincoln.

On May 14, the two classes of Stryker fourth graders visited the train depot where the Stryker Area Heritage Council maintains a museum of Stryker artifacts. Trustees, Sue Buehrer and Terry Wieland, gave a presentation on local history followed by a depot tour. The students learned many historical facts about their village.

TRAIN STORY … Terry Wieland tells the students the story of “The Great Locomotive Chase” beside a model of the General steam engine. In the background, wooden oars and a picture of the Stryker Boat Oar factory are hanging on the wall. Because of the abundance of lumber, oars made in Stryker were shipped all over the world.
