EDON — The Edon Village Council convened a joint meeting with the Florence Township Cemetery Board Trustees on May 19 at 7:00 p.m.

Present were council members David Loughborough, Jeff Pease, Austin Thiel, Lee Lawrence, Dan Ankney, and Brian Shaffer, alongside Mayor Duane Thiel, Village Administrator Chad Ordway, Solicitor Tom Thompson, and trustees Mark Trausch, Albert Brown, Doug Michael, and Don Imm.

Police Chief Tom Szymczak, Jenn Stantz from WEDCO, and several community members also attended. Fiscal Officer Heidi Bidwell was absent.

The meeting opened with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by cemetery board business. Mayor Thiel reappointed David Loughborough as cemetery board chair, as his term was set to expire this year.

Loughborough reviewed the cemetery’s budget, highlighting ongoing mowing and landscaping efforts. Solicitor Thompson noted that the cemetery levy will appear on next year’s ballot, urging council awareness. The cemetery portion concluded with a motion to adjourn by Jeff Pease, seconded by Shaffer, at 7:20 p.m.

Transitioning to the regular council meeting, the agenda began with the approval of prior meeting minutes, moved by Shaffer and seconded by Ankney. Financial reports and bills were then approved, with a motion by Lawrence and a second from Loughborough.

In communications, Chief Szymczak shared updates on his attendance at an officer wellness program in Columbus and reported a successful evacuation drill conducted by the police department.

Mayor Thiel announced that the village office would be closed on May 26th in observance of Memorial Day. During committee reports, a question was raised about updating park playground equipment to better serve older children, sparking discussion on community recreation needs.

Village Administrator Chad Ordway provided updates on public works, noting that mowing notices had been delivered to residents.

He and Solicitor Thompson discussed the unsold Woodville property, with Thompson exploring options with other counselors to determine the next steps.

The council addressed Resolution 01-25, accepting the amounts and rates set by the Williams County Budget Commission. Ankney moved to suspend the rules, seconded by Lawrence, followed by a motion to pass the resolution, moved by Ankney and seconded by Pease.

The meeting adjourned at 7:40 p.m., with the next Edon Village Council meeting scheduled for June 16th at 7:00 p.m.
