ARCHBOLD, OHIO –The Northwest State Community College Board of Trustees held a regular meeting today. During the meeting, Dan Burklo, dean of Math, Science & Engineering discussed new ways of providing STEM education to students. The programs are incorporating a hybrid format utilizing online course work at home and hands on lab work on campus. He also discussed the expansion of opportunities with Miami University with the addition of a second bachelor’s degree in computer science technologies available without leaving the NSCC campus.
Devin Dye of Montpelier, OH graduated from the Miami program in spring 2015. He began the NSCC/Miami program directly after high school opting to attend NSCC instead of a traditional four year university. He was able to complete the first three years paying the lower NSCC tuition and one year paying MU tuition rates saving him thousands of dollars. He was named the “Outstanding Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technologies Student” for Miami University at graduation without ever attending a class outside of the NSCC campus.
“The Miami partnership in electro-mechanical engineering has proven to be a great benefit for both our students and area employers,” stated Burklo. “We are providing great opportunities that save money for the students while providing valuable education and training that will benefit area employers. Most students in this program choose to stay in northwest Ohio to live and work.”
In other board action:
•Approved employment of Marianna Malek and Joni Mavis, full-time math faculty; Ronald Scozzari, dean of industrial technologies; David Jones, training coordinator for advanced manufacturing; James Bellamy, coordinator of external marketing and communications
•Approved the promotion of of Renee Bostelman, admissions advisor; Wendy Walters, financial aid counselor, Morgan Wertman, network systems administrator I
•Approved miscellaneous employment contracts
•Approved the financial report
•Approved a plan to reduce cost of earning a degree by five percent.
