Mary Kay (McKarns) Moorhead, age 83, of Bryan, Ohio, and formerly of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, passed away at her home on Sunday, March 29, 2026.
Mary Kay was born on Jan. 31, 1943, in Bryan, Ohio, the daughter of the late Willis and Gladys (Cronin) McKarns. She was a 1961 graduate of Bryan High School and continued her education at Defiance College, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Education degree in 1965.
Her passion for learning continued throughout her life as she completed several graduate courses at Penn State University. On July 1, 1967, Mary Kay married Dwight John Moorhead at Pulaski United Methodist Church, Bryan, Ohio. They shared 48 years of marriage until Dwight’s passing on Oct. 16, 2015.
Mary Kay began her teaching career at Montpelier Exempted Village Schools, where she taught fourth grade for two years. She and Dwight later moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she accepted a third-grade teaching position with the West Jefferson Hills School District.
She later transferred to the middle school, where she dedicated 35 years to educating and inspiring her students. She was a member of Windover Hills United Methodist Church, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Arnold Palmer’s Country Club in Latrobe, Pennsylvania.
In retirement, Dwight and Mary Kay moved to Bryan, Ohio, where they were members of Pulaski United Methodist Church. Mary Kay was a devoted fan of Pittsburgh sports, especially the Steelers, Penguins, and Pirates.
She loved getting lost in a good book and was an active member of several book clubs in Pittsburgh. She also enjoyed shopping with friends and always took pride in being dressed for any occasion.
Surviving is her brother-in-law, Darrell (Cheryl) Moorhead; cousin, Mic (Jenni) McKarns; two nephews, Derek Moorhead and Jay (Lauren) Moorhead; two great-nephews, Jack Moorhead and George Moorhead; and many friends. Mary Kay was preceded in death by her parents; stepmother, Edna McKarns; husband, Dwight Moorhead; father and mother-in-law, Jack and June Moorhead; grandparents, Jim and Norg McKarns.
Visitation for Mary Kay will be held Thursday, April 2, 2026, from 11 a.m. to noon at Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home, 206 North Lynn Street, Bryan, with the funeral service beginning at noon in the funeral home with Pastor Nico Kinner officiating. Interment will follow at Shiffler Cemetery, Bryan.
