Mervin C. Towers

Mervin Charles TowersMervin Charles (Shorty) Towers was born March 18, 1919 the son of Melvin Bert and Violet Stella (Sutton) Towers. He was a 1939 graduate of Stryker High School. Mervin married Laurene Dick Brown on May 13, 1939. They were married 72 years.

Mervin was a WWII Navy veteran serving as a machinist on a Landing Craft Support ship in the Pacific.

Shorty worked 42 years at the Aro Corp in Bryan as a millwright. After his retirement he worked at Green Acres Campground in Florida. He spent over 40 summers on Hamilton Lake.

He is survived by five children: Tommy Lee (Mary Lou), of Crossville TN; Nancy Ann Vollmer, Angola, IN; Kathy Sue (Bert) Dirschell, Centertown MO; Cindy Lu (Ed) Ott, Pioneer, Judy Ka (Nathan) Baer, Pettisville. A special family member Robert (Kathy) Easler.


Grandpa Merv enjoyed his grandchildren, Wendy, David, and Dean Towers, Vickie Finch, Melanie (Ed) Nickerson, Steve (Lisa) Vollmer, Doug and Drew Dirschell; Oliver and Elliott Ott; Emily and Kendahl Baer. Great-grandchildren are Marissa (Ryan) Williams, Leanne (John) Pleinis, Madilyn and Joseph Towers, Miranda Vollmer, Mallorie (Chris) Hannon, Samuel (Tracey) Butler, Kyle Butler, Kelsie (Andrew) Ott; Great-Great Grandchildren; Brady and Briley Hannon, Lydia and Nolan Ott. A special lady friend Lillian Brooker.

Mervin was preceded in death by his wife, Laurene, an infant twin brother, Melvin, a sister Evelyn Friedel, a grandson Ethan Ott and a great-grandson David K. Towers.

He was a member of the Stryker United Methodist church and the Stryker American Legion.


Mervin went on work mission trips with the Mission Team of the Edon United Methodist Church.

Merv was a modern day Good Samaritan, he enjoyed helping people. He was a GREAT fix-it man from toasters to cars. He loved children, dogs and telling jokes.

Memorials are to pass Merv’s kindness on. Give or do something for someone else. “Do not grow weary of doing good.” II Thess. 3:13 Or you can donate the Cumberland County Hospice.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00am Friday March 11, 2016 at the Edon United Methodist Church with Rev. David Miller officiating. Interment will precede the memorial service at 9:45am at the Oakwood Cemetery in Stryker. The burial procession will leave the Grisier Funeral Home at 9:30am. Friends may visit with the family at the Grisier Funeral Home in Stryker from 4:00-8:00pm on Thursday. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.GrisierFH.com
