MONTPELIER, OHIO –The Williams County Safe Communities program reports three fatal crashes with four fatalities for the third quarter of 2016 during the months of July-September 2016. This compares with the third quarter of 2015 reporting of three fatal crashes with three fatalities in Williams County. There have been eight confirmed fatalities for Williams County through September 2016 that have been reviewed. In 2015 there were a total of eight fatalities for the year.
Non-use of seatbelts was a factor in all four fatalities in the third quarter of 2016. Alcohol use was indicated in one of the crashes. Three countermeasures were implemented in the August 4, 2016 double fatal crash at the intersection of US 6 and State Route 576 with the removal of a tree, repainting of pavement lines at the entire intersection and the STOP signs replaced with new larger “freeway size” STOP signs on both sides of the roadway. “Cross Traffic Does Not STOP” signage was also added below all four STOP signs.
As of November 7, 2016, Ohio traffic statistics reports 926 confirmed fatalities for 2016 as compared to 968 fatalities for the same date in 2015 a difference of -42 and an -4% change. There are an additional 56 unconfirmed provisional traffic fatalities to date for 2016.
