Williams County Department Of Aging Has Many Activities Planned

As spring dawns, wintry weather gives way to sunny skies and warmer temperatures. The promise of spring and new life becomes evident as crocuses poke their heads out of the ground, and lawns begin to turn green again. This spring, William’s County Senior Citizens will dust off the last vestiges of winter and venture out more. They will have plenty to do to keep them busy in the upcoming months. The county’s Department of Aging has several fun activities planned.

The organization now has a Facebook presence. Those wishing to “Like” their page may go to their page “Williams County Department of Aging. This will enable citizens to access the latest news and announcements. They will also be able to see photographs on the site.

An evening meal is planned for Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at the Bryan Senior Citizen Center from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. with Bingo and prizes following the dinner. Our Senior Citizen Centers just wouldn’t be the same without or dedicated volunteers, so those who give their time to area seniors will be honored with a pizza party at each center on April 25 at the regular lunch times.

It is the department’s annual tradition to honor citizens age 90 or over in May. This year, they will honor the nonagenarians and maybe even some centenarians (those in their 90’s and 100’s) with a special luncheon on Friday, May 17 at noon at the Montpelier Moose Lodge. Entertainment begins at 11:30 a.m. They invite everyone who qualifies to join them for “great food and entertainment” on that day. They will provide transportation or family members are welcome to come with them. Those wishing to attend should call the office at 419-633-4317 to make a reservation or arrange transportation.

Seniors will also be able to attend a Brenda Lee concert at Bearcreek Farms on May 16. There will be a charge of $74 per person, and this will cover a meal, concert, and transportation. Tickets are available on a first come-first serve basis, so those interested should contact their site managers soon.

Senior Center participants are eligible to receive a free ticket for transportation to recreational activities for those who dine at a senior center for 80% of the meals served. The Center’s provide transportation for “dinner night out, movies, shopping out of town, play dress rehearsals and other adventures.” This means that “centers that serve five days per week, that would be 17 (days of attendance) in April, and those that serve four days per week, it would be 14 days in the month.” They add that “each month differs on the number of serving days, so we list them in each calendar. For seniors who have not yet filed their income taxes, there will be tax preparers from AARP at the Bryan Senior Center. Those interested should call the Bryan Center at 419-636-4047 to make an appointment. Income tax forms for 2012 including 1040 and 1040EZ, as well as forms for the school district income tax are available at all seven senior centers in the county. These include instructions for the Ohio forms.

The Williams County Department of Aging has Senior Centers in seven Williams County towns where persons can have a healthy meal, have fun activities, and good fellowship. Each center also offers activities in addition to those listed above. They are staffed and managed by individuals who truly care about the people that they serve.

The Bryan, Montpelier, and West Unity Centers are open Monday through Friday (except for holidays), and the others are open Monday through Thursday. There are located at the following addresses:
